These two videos are for my girls. They came on my radio (playlist on my phone of shuffled songs) back-to-back on my way to Nashville, Tennessee.
First, the two of you lived through the years with me, your dad, as your dad. I, also, lived those years as the husband to your mother. Like the lyrics to Blake Shelton’s “I Lived It” state: I lived it. Meaning, I lived those years we were together being a husband to your mom, while at the same time being your dad. The lyrics that really spoke to me are:
”Oh, you think I’m talking crazy
In a different language you might not understand
Oh, that’s alright
That’s just the kind of life that made me who I am
Just taking my mind on a visit
Back in time ’cause I miss it
You wouldn’t know to love it like I love it
Unless you lived it
And man, I lived it”
Kaitlyn and Skylar, I lived it. I lived the joy of being your dad. However, I also have lived with your mom’s actions, which have kept us apart and nearly ruined me. Neither you nor anybody else exactly knows what it has been like, unless you lived it, and man, I lived it.
As for our current situation, I tried to be your dad post-divorce. But, your mom wanted nothing of it. She has Steve, and only is capable of having one man in her life at the expense of our relationship. The Phil Collins song is one of acceptance, accepting things as they are. That’s just the way it is. Just know that your dad is here for you when you are ready to reach out. All you have to do is hit the contact button on this page.
I love you to the end of the universe, and back and then some.
